Choosing an ITSM Platform: What to Settle Before ServiceNow, Freshservice, HaloITSM or JSM

Choosing an IT service management (ITSM) platform is easier when you start with how your service desk should work, not with a feature comparison. ServiceNow, Freshservice, HaloITSM and Jira Service Management can all run a capable desk. Buying one before your routines exist usually leaves you with an expensive inbox.

Start with the routines

For a small or growing team, ITIL 4 should become a short list of routines rather than a binder:

Write down which of these you actually run today, and who owns each one.

Signs you need a proper service desk

Match the tool to your team

The right desk depends on process maturity, admin capacity, integrations and budget. As a general guide:

None of that is a recommendation for your company. The key question is whether your own admin can run the tool you pick.

Count the whole cost

The licence is only part of it. Include implementation, integrations, admin time, and moving existing tickets and knowledge articles. Ask each vendor for current pricing in writing.

Run a short pilot

Shortlist two tools and run the same three or four real scenarios in each. Ask your agents and the people who raise requests to score them. A pilot usually settles the question faster than a comparison table.
